The tutorials in this site are based around the development
of our own Intranet. This Intranet is located on a Windows
2000 Server as part of a larger group of corporate file servers.
The site itself contains around 20,000 documents in a variety
of formats, all of which are catalogued using Microsoft Index
Server allowing searches to be carried out.
What is an Intranet?
An Intranet is a private, secure space allowing members of
your company or group access to shared information. Unlike
public web sites, your Intranet is internal allowing you to
store information which would be unsuitable for public viewing.
Such items could be Competitor Data, Contract Drawings, Financial
reports or Intellectual Property and R&D news.
Intranet or Extranet?
An Extranet is simply a Intranet which can be accessed from
the Outside world, this may be through the Internet via SSL,
a VPN or using specific dial-up accounts. It is important
to note however, that an Extranet is still a 'controlled access'
site. You decide who can or can not have access to the information
within it and those who do may extend to Clients and Suppliers
as well as Staff. |
